How the Colosseum Night Tour Works

Four steps from the Mamertine Prison to the arena floor — two hours after the daytime crowds have gone home.

  1. Meet at the Mamertine Prison

Your licensed guide meets the group outside the Mamertine Prison at Clivo Argentario 1 — the ancient Roman jail on the slope of the Capitoline Hill, two minutes from the Roman Forum entrance. Bring your mobile voucher and photo ID: after-hours Colosseum entry is on the Park's named-ticket list.

  2. Walk Through Ancient Rome at Dusk

Before the Colosseum gates open for the night, your guide leads a walking tour of the Imperial Forums along Via dei Fori Imperiali — the Temple of Vesta, the Arch of Titus, and the Palatine Hill silhouette as the city lights begin to glow. Forty minutes, easy pace, no daytime crowds.

  3. Enter the Colosseum After Hours

With daytime visitors gone, your group enters on a dedicated after-hours ticket. Walk the arena floor where gladiators fought — not the viewing tier — and descend into the hypogeum: the underground passages, animal cages, and 28-trap-door lift system that powered the spectacles. Your guide explains every detail.

  4. Finish on the Arena Floor

The tour ends on the restored wooden arena floor, looking up at the Flavian Amphitheatre under architectural lighting — the view no daytime tourist sees. Total duration 2 hours. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your chosen date.

What Guests Say About the Colosseum Night Tour

5/5 from 1128 verified guests

"We enjoyed our tour with Carlos. He answered our questions and started our tour right on time. He took his time with our group and helped our older folks out by showing where the elevator was and waiting for someone who needed the bathroom. He helped us easily make it through all the checkpoints with our ids and tickets. He was a wealth of information about the history of the Colosseum and even shared with us Photos of Gladiators. I came away with so much knowledge and realized the movies have been lying to me. Thank you Carlos for a wonderful tour. We appreciate you."

"Sam was a wonderful tour guide! We really appreciated his historical knowledge, enthusiasm, and willingness to answer questions and let us know when there are historical details up for debate. Beautiful to see the Colosseum at sunset!"

"Fabio (and Rufus) were excellent guides! We learned interesting facts that helped us understand the history and architecture. He was very personable, knowing everyone’s name from the meeting point throughout the tour, never missing a name! Fabio had a great personality and sense of humor too. We were never rushed, and received great instructions, The views were amazing as the sun went down. It was very hot so I’m glad we chose the evening tour. Being in a small group was very convenient. Fabio seemed to know how to navigate things so we weren’t mixed with larger groups, which allowed us more time in premium spots. Thank you for this great experience!"
